Have you ever tried the pastel painting tutorial found in the new annual catalog on pages 118 – 119? If you missed this section showing different watercoloring techniques with different mediums make sure to check it out.   There are lots of techniques you can do with the different mediums, but these pages will give you a start on creating some different watercoloring techniques on your cards or projects.

I must confess I haven’t used the soft pastels in a very long time.  They have never been one of my favorite mediums to work with, until now.  What brought on this change?  Well France and I decided to incorporate one of these technique sections found in the annual catalog at each of our team meetings.  This month it was my turn to talk about the happenings at Stampin’ Up! and it was France’s turn to demonstrate.  Each month we will focus on one of the techniques from the annual catalog beginning with pages 118 – 119.  If you look at these pages you will see the techniques are: Paint with Water, Pencil Me In, Spritz Bliss and Pretty Pastels.  France demonstrated each of these techniques shown in the catalog.  She always provided different tips and techniques for using each of these mediums.  After her demonstration she challenged the team to use the mediums and create their own card using at least one of the different mediums and showcase it on our team Facebook page, with the possibility of winning a prize for participating.   These technique pages will be our focus for the next few months.  Next month it is my turn and I will be doing the Get Moving section found on pages 120-121 of the annual catalog.  So, if you would like to participate, now is a great time to join my team with the awesome sign on special going on until May 31, 2024.  Want more details or would like to sign up; click HERE.

Pastel Painting Tutorial

Can you tell where exactly I used the Pastels on my card?  I have 2 different watercoloring techniques on this card.  It is probably harder to tell in the pictures versus seeing it in person.   Let’s begin with the flower image from the Spotlight on Nature bundle.  I also used the coordinating circle dies from the bundle as well.

Here are the steps I took to achieve the technique of using the soft pastels and stamping:

• Grab a piece of the Fluid Watercolor Paper
• Stamp the flower image onto the watercolor paper using Black Stazon ink.
• Using the water painter filled with water wet the space you are going to add the chalk.
• Using the spatula end of the Take Your Pick Tool, scrape off the edges of the chalk onto a clear block.
• Using the water painter pick up the chalk and paint the image.
• Clean off the chalk from the painter and switch colors.

The best tip for achieving your desired results for this pastel painting tutorial with the soft pastels and stamping is to wet your watercolor paper or regular paper first before coloring.  This helps to move the pastels across the cardstock.

What is the other technique I used? Well, take a look at the butterfly. This was done using the Watercolor Pencils and the water painter. I did use the watercolor paper for this as well. I had some scrap paper left over so I didn’t want it to go to waste. I did stamp it with the Black Stazon ink and colored it with the pencils and then blended the colors with my water painter.

For both the techniques I used the water painter, which you could also use the blender pen, but I like the flow I get with the water. This is just a personal preference; you will have to give them a try and see which technique you like best. It is fun to try new things and get out of the everyday stamp, ink and paper techniques and try some new mediums in your stamping.
