Are you looking for printable card making sketches that give you a starting point without limiting your creativity? This week’s card sketch #72 is a great example of how one simple layout can create completely different handmade cards.

Today I’m sharing three cards using Designer Series Paper, taking you from beautiful fall designs right into Christmas. Each card uses a different Designer Series Paper pack and has its own personality, but all three begin with the same basic card sketch.

That’s what I love about card sketches! They give you a starting point, and from there you can change the measurements, papers, colors, focal points, and embellishments to make the design your own.

Card Sketch #72 – Use the Sketch Your Way

For two of today’s cards, I followed card sketch #72 pretty closely, including the circles shown for the focal point.

For the third card, I switched things up. Instead of circles, I used Sweet Words & Labels dies for my focal point. This is a great reminder that a card sketch is meant to inspire you—not restrict you!

See circles on a sketch but want to use squares, rectangles, labels, flowers, or die-cut images instead? Go for it! Use the basic layout as your creative starting point and then make it work with the supplies you have on hand.

Card #1 – Sunflower Fields Fall Card

My first card follows sketch #72 just as it is shown and features the gorgeous Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper.

I started with an Early Espresso card base and selected two different prints from the Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper. One print creates the larger background on the card front, while the smaller Designer Series Paper pieces were matted onto Early Espresso cardstock before being adhered to the card.

For the focal point, I punched two circles and then created the sunflower using the Radiant Sunflowers Dies.

The sentiment is from the Banner Sayings Stamp Set and was punched with the Triple Banner Punch. A few Radiant Gems add just the right amount of sparkle to finish this warm fall card.

This is a perfect example of how your Designer Series Paper can do so much of the work for you!

Card #2 – Painted Patch Pumpkin Card

We’re staying with fall for card number two, but changing the colors and Designer Series Paper gives the same sketch a completely different look.

For this card, I started with a Secret Sea card base and used two coordinating prints from the Painted Patch Designer Series Paper.

Just like the first card, I followed the circles shown on card sketch #72. This time, however, I hand-cut a couple of pumpkins directly from the Designer Series Paper and popped them up over the circles to create my focal point.

The sentiment is again from the Banner Sayings Stamp Set and punched with the Triple Banner Punch.

I love how simply changing the Designer Series Paper and focal image takes the same layout from sunflowers to pumpkins while still keeping that beautiful fall feeling.

Card #3 – Whispering Woods Christmas Card

Now let’s take card sketch #72 from fall straight into Christmas!

My card base for this version is Pretty Peacock, and I used two different prints from the Whispering Woods 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper.

Whispering Woods has a soft watercolor look with cool, winter-inspired colors. The pack includes both full-pattern sheets and designs that can be cut apart and used as focal points on your cards.

The pack includes 12 sheets—four each of three double-sided designs—and coordinates with Azure Afternoon, Blueberry Bushel, Garden Green, Night of Navy, Pecan Pie, Pretty Peacock, and Shaded Spruce.

For my card, I matted the smaller Designer Series Paper pieces onto Pretty Peacock cardstock before attaching them to the card front.

Here’s where I changed up the sketch.

Instead of using the circles shown on card sketch #72, I pulled out the Sweet Words and Labels Dies. I die cut the larger label from Pretty Peacock cardstock and used the next smaller label to die cut the adorable moose and Christmas tree image from the Whispering Woods Designer Series Paper.

The Christmas sentiment is from the Soiree Salutations Stamp Set. I stamped it, punched the end with the Triple Banner Punch, and finished the card with a couple of retired Pool Party gems I had in my stash.

One Card Sketch, So Many Creative Possibilities

These three cards show exactly why I enjoy working with card sketches. You don’t have to copy every element exactly as it appears on the sketch.

Use the layout to get started, then make it your own!

Change the measurements. Turn the sketch. Swap the circles for another shape. Use the Designer Series Paper you already have or pick up a new favorite. Your finished card doesn’t have to look exactly like mine—or even exactly like the sketch.

The goal is to get those creative ideas flowing!
